Looking for the best beach wagons with big wheels so you don’t get stuck in the sand?
Going to the beach with kids always involves bringing a lot of stuff. Between towels, snacks, drinks, beach chairs, beach toys, the kids themselves, it can be a lot.
Instead of carrying it all while running behind the kids as they sprint towards the sand (this might’ve been a real live event for me…), a much easier option is to throw everything (and everyone) in a wagon and pull it to the beach.
The tricky part is that not all wagons are meant for the beach. Most don’t have wheels that can actually get through soft sand.
So instead of pulling a wagon full of kids and gear through sand like a sled, it’s best to get a wagon that is meant to work in sand.
And that’s all in the wheels! A wagon needs the right type of big wheels to be able to glide through sand. That means rubber (not plastic) and all-terrain, beach/sand, or balloon wheels.
I did (way too much) research and tested out a few different wagons to put together a list of my top contenders of best beach wagons with big wheels.
While most of my options are wagons for carrying kids, I also included a couple of beach wagons and carts too for just lugging your beach gear. Because who doesn’t like options??

Best Beach Wagons With Big Wheels: Things To Consider
These are the six features I think are musts when deciding on a beach wagon with big wheels:
Weight
You’re already putting so much in the wagon, you don’t want the wagon itself to be too heavy too – plus, you’ll need to lift it in your trunk. All my options except for two are under 40 pounds (and the majority are low 20s/high 30s.)
Capacity
The pounds add up quickly when you throw your kids and all the beach gear into the wagon, so it’ll need to be able to carry a lot. All of my options of beach wagons and carts can carry at least 110 pounds.
Can carry children
Some wagon brands specifically state that children are not meant to ride in them. I noted options for beach wagons that can and cannot carry children.
Wheels
The wheels need to be rubber (not plastic) and more importantly, all-terrain or beach tires, to get through sand easily. another option is balloon tires, which are made from polyurethane or nylon. They can handle harder services and are ideal for sand, mud, gross, even rock.
Maneuverability
The option to both push or pull and 360-degree wheels is very convenient for easily moving around.
Foldable
Folding is necessary to fit the wagon in car trunks and to store without taking up too much space. And the easier it is to fold, the better!
Cost
You get what you pay for… we want to make sure we’re getting a quality product but not breaking the bank while doing it. The majority of my top contenders of best beach wagons and carts are below $500.
FAQs: Best Beach Wagons With Big Wheels
Do you really need a beach wagon?
You need a beach wagon if you regularly go to the beach. The convenience of having it on hand to carry the kids and your gear to the beach is worth every penny! And bonus is that you can use it everywhere else you go too.
Do beach wagons work on sand?
They do! Beach wagons are made specifically for sand. The difference is the tires that are used on them. Rubber, all-terrain or beach tires are the key to being able to glide through the sand. The ones on my list all work on sand!
Are plastic or rubber wheels better for sand?
Rubber wheels are the only option for sand. Plastic wheels will not be able to get your through soft sand, so you’ll be pulling your wagon through the sand like a sled.
Can kids ride in a beach wagon?
Kids cannot ride in all beach wagons. Some are meant specifically to carry children, while others are just for hauling your beach gear. The ones that are meant to hold children offer seats and seatbelts.
The beach wagons that can carry kids on my list are Radio Flyer Beach and Boardwalk Wagon, Hauck Eco Wagon, Evenflo Pivot All-Terrain Stroller Wagon, Anthem All-Terrain Wagon Stroller, Jeep Deluxe Wrangler Wagon Stroller, Wonderfold W2 Luxe Stroller Wagon, and Veer All-Terrain Cruiser.
